When is the Right Time to Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

With the growing awareness of our need for air quality and health issues such as asthma and other breathing/lung issues the debate for air duct cleaning can be somewhat confusing.

According to the Lung Associations website: "Canadians spend ninety percent of their time indoors." Cleaning the ducts would be a great start in helping to contribute to cleaner air quality. Here are seven reasons worth considering when deciding to clean, or not to clean the air ducts in your home or office.

Following are seven reasons to consider when making the decision to have your air ducts cleaned

  1. Health issues such as allergies, asthma, or other breathing issues. Do you or your family seem to have more sniffles, coughs or are you sneezing more than usual?

  2. Contamination and odor issues such as water, smoke or vermin for example: mice, rats, bats etc.

  3. A new home build or recent renovation. Yes even new homes have drywall dust and sawdust. The best attempts at keeping things clean during construction and not running the furnace still aren't foolproof. The fine drywall dust and sawdust still seem to land in the air vents.

  4. Cats and dogs, pets in general that produce dander and shed fur.

  5. Purchasing a "new to you" house. Not knowing the history of the house. If animals have been in the house, past activities such as renovations or flooding.

  6. Replacing the old furnace. People have complained that after the new furnace was put in, the dust increased. This is likely due to a much better and stronger fan. I have also heard that furnace parts have the potential to wear out quicker with dust blowing through the system.

  7. Noticeable airflow issues with certain vents. An inspection can reveal notable issues such as too much dirt and debris to objects such as clothing, books etc. It is also worth pointing out that airflow issues can cause furnace parts to break down. If your furnace has had the same part replaced multiple times within a short period of time, it might pay to have your ducts inspected.

Although this is not an exhaustive list it is a great start to consider in the decision making process of whether duct cleaning is necessary and/or the right decision for you and your family.
